The medal "For the defense of the Caucasus" ( Russian Медаль "За оборону Кавказа" ) was a Soviet award during the Second World War on the occasion of the German summer offensive , which led to the occupation of large parts of the Caucasus by the Wehrmacht . In the course of the North Caucasian operation , however, the Red Army managed to liberate the Caucasus again by February 1943. The medal was donated by Josef Stalin and awarded to all those members of the Red Army who were involved in the defense of the Caucasus.

Appearance and wearing style

The bronze medal shows on its obverse the center of the Caucasus Mountains on their peaks planes flying to the West, and against which drive an oil field with winding towers three tanks in the same direction. The inscription За оборону Кавказа (For the defense of the Caucasus) can be read in a semicircle . This representation is surrounded by a bundle of rose twigs, with a Soviet star between the branches in the upper center . The letters CCCP , separated by hammer and sickle , can be read at their lower intersection . The reverse shows the three-line inscription: За нашу советскую родину (For our Soviet homeland).

The medal was worn on the top left chest of the awardee on an elongated pentagonal fabric-covered clasp, the base color of which is light green. The ribbon shows a blue hem on both sides as well as a vertically woven central stripe, which has the color combination blue-white-red-green-red-white-blue. The associated interim brace is of the same quality.
