Cornell Dupree (born December 19, 1942 in Fort Worth , Texas - † May 8, 2011 ) was an American musician . The guitarist has worked as a session musician in over 2500 recording sessions in the fields of popular music, soul jazz , fusion and rhythm and blues .

Live and act

Cornell Dupree played in King Curtis' R&B group when he was twenty . Soon afterwards he began to work as a session musician, for example for Brook Benton ("Rainy Night in Georgia") and artists such as Lou Rawls , Paul Simon , Barbra Streisand , Harry Belafonte , Lena Horne , Roberta Flack , Joe Cocker , Michael Bolton and Mariah Carey . Dupree was also a member of Aretha Franklin's touring band from 1967 to 1976 and has appeared on numerous albums in the jazz , soul jazz , funk and fusion genre, such as Carla Bley ( Dinner Music ), Billy Cobham ( Total Eclipse ), Hank Crawford , The Crusaders , Miles Davis ("Red China Blues", 1973, on Get Up with It ), Les McCann ( Invitation to Openess ), Eddie Harris , Freddie King , Rahsaan Roland Kirk ( Blacknuss , 1971), Herbie Mann or Esther Phillips , most of which were created on the Atlantic label, as well as being an orchestra member in big band productions by Bobby Hutcherson , Elvin Jones , Grant Green ( Blue Breakbeats ), Grover Washington Jr. or Bernard Purdie . With the drummer, Dupree recorded the album Teasin ' under his own name in 1974 , followed by Saturday Night Fever (1977) and Shadow Dancing (1978). During this time he was a member of the studio band Stuff , which was under contract with Warner Brothers and recorded four albums. From the late 1980s, Dupree still recorded a few jazz albums; his LP Coast to Coast (1988) was nominated for a Grammy . In 2006 he performed in Vienna with Les McCann and saxophonist Ronnie Cuber in the all-star band Soul Survivors .
