The medal "Veteran of the Armed Forces of the USSR" ( Russian Медаль "Ветеран Вооруженных Сил СССР" , medal "Veteran Vooruschennych Sil SSSR") was a state and military award of the USSR , which was donated on May 20, 1976 in one stage. The medal was awarded to more than 400,000 personalities. Other sources indicate a number of awards in excess of 800,000.

Award terms

The medal could be awarded to all members of the Soviet Army , the naval fleet , the border troops and the internal troops of the USSR upon their honorable discharge from military service to the reserve. On retirement, the medal could also be awarded if the recipient had served in the armed forces for 25 calendar years without blame. When the medal was awarded, periods of service that had been completed before the foundation date were also taken into account.

Appearance and wearing style

The medal has a diameter of 32 mm, is made of brass and is silver-plated. On her obverse at the upper edge of the medal it shows a hammer and sickle , in front of which a 13 mm large enamelled red star is depicted. Underneath, the abbreviation СССР can be read, under which a branch of laurel pointing to the left can be seen. The following semicircular waving banner shows the inscription Ветеран Вооруженных Сил . Together with the СССР above it results in the saying Veteran of the armed forces of the USSR . The lapel of the medal is smooth and empty. The medal was worn on the upper left chest of the borrower on a gray pentagonal clasp, the left hem of which has the color combination red (3 mm) - gray (2 mm) - red (1 mm). The right seam shows the ribbon colors of the Order of Fame alternating between orange (1 mm) - black (1 mm) - orange (1 mm) - black (1 mm) - orange (1 mm) - black (1 mm) - orange (2 mm ).
