Alexander Nikolayevich Shokhin ( Russian : Александр Николаевич Шохин * 25. December 1951 in Sawinski , Rajon Plesetsk , Arkhangelsk Oblast , Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic , USSR ) is a Russian politician, statesman and member of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the party " United Russia " .

Career

Shochin graduated from Lomonosov University in Moscow in 1974 . Between 1974 and 1982 he worked as a research assistant at the Research Institute for Economics in the State Planning Committee of the USSR.

In 1987 Shochin first became an advisor to the Foreign Minister of the USSR, later head of the Office for International Economic Relations of the Soviet Foreign Ministry.

Shochin's political career as a civil servant began with his appointment as Minister of Labor of the Russian Federal Socialist Soviet Republic a few months before the collapse of the Soviet Union. From December 1992 to January 1994 he rose first to the position of Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers, then to Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation . Between January and November 1994 he was the Minister of Economy of Russia.

In December 1995, Shochin was elected a State Duma deputy for the second convocation of the Our House Russia faction . From 1996 to 1997 he was the first deputy chairman of the State Duma . In September 1998 Shochin was appointed Deputy Prime Minister of Russia in the government of Yevgeny Primakov , but resigned after just one month.

In 2002 Shochin prematurely resigned his mandate as a member of the Federation Council and henceforth devoted himself to public activities. From 2004 he is a member of the ruling United Russia party. Since September 2005 he has held the position of Chairman of the Association of Russian Industrialists and Entrepreneurs.

In February 2012, Shochin was officially appointed ombudsman for Vladimir Putin , who had announced his third candidacy in the presidential elections.
