The Federal Well Sluzhba ochrany Rossiyskoy Federazii ( FSO , Russian Федеральная служба охраны Российской Федерации , Federal Service for Surveillance of the Russian Federation ' ) is a Russian security service , whose main task is the security of the Russian president and the Russian government is.

history

The first guarding services for statesmen appeared in Tsarist Russia in the mid-16th century. For example, in 1555, to protect Ivan the Terrible, a regiment of 2,000 strikers was formed in the immediate vicinity of the Tsar's residence in the Moscow Kremlin . In the centuries to come, protecting the tsar and his family was the task of the military.

Today's FSO was only founded on September 3, 1881 as the personal guard service of his Imperial Majesty and took over the bodyguard for the Tsar and his family. This was the first time that the task of protecting the head of state had been transferred to an organization specially set up for this purpose. Major General Pyotr Tscherevin became the first head of the service . He was confirmed in this office by the Senate on September 16 of the same year.

One of the first tasks of this new organization was to find the murderer of Tsar Alexander II . The assassination attempt on the tsar had also made the latter aware that the tsar and members of his family had to be protected from all revolutionary activities.

During the October Revolution of 1917, however, the duties of the service changed increasingly. With the emergence of the Soviet Union , the entire security concept changed and fell into the remit of the 9th KGB administration.

From December 1993, the Glawnoje Uprawlenije Ochrany (GUO) was set up as its own special security service to protect the then Russian President Boris Yeltsin , the Prime Minister and the members of the government from the KGB personnel. This was led by General Alexander Korschakow , a close confidante of Yeltsin, whose protection he also took over in the KGB since 1985.

The current structure and tasks of the FSO are set out in a law of May 27, 1996. Accordingly, the Russian President can also use this service for defense and reconnaissance tasks. The Kremlin regiment is also subordinate to the FSO.

The service has around 40,000 employees.
