Junus-bek Bamatgirejewitsch Jewkurow ( Russian Юну́с-бек Баматгире́евич Евку́ров , born July 29, 1963 in Tarskoje, North Ossetia ) is a Russian politician and Deputy Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation. The Lieutenant General of the Russian Army was President of the Autonomous Russian Republic of Ingushetia from October 31, 2008 to June 26, 2019 .

Life

After attending school in Malgobek and Beslan , Yevkurov served in the Soviet Army from 1982 and later took up an officer career. He studied at the Paratrooper Institute in Ryazan (graduated in 1989), the Military Academy of the Russian Armed Forces (1997) and the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces (2004).

He took part as a commander in the Chechen wars and the deployment of the Russian contingent as part of the SFOR mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina .

On October 30, 2008, Yevkurov was installed as incumbent President of the Republic of Ingushetia after the resignation of Murat Sjasikow by the Russian President Dmitri Medvedev , and was elected President of the Ingush Parliament the following day.

On June 22, 2009, Junus-bek Yevkurov was seriously injured in an attack on his convoy. Yevkurov was in serious condition, but his life was out of danger, said a spokesman for the presidential office. Four bodyguards and his driver were killed and others injured.

After months of mass protests following a border change in favor of Chechnya , Yevkurov resigned as President of Ingushetia on June 26, 2019. He was succeeded by Mahmud-Ali Kalimatov .

In July 2019, Yevkurov was appointed Deputy Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation by presidential decree.
