The Russian biographical dictionary ( Russian Русский биографический словарь / Russki biografitscheski slowar , wiss. Transliteration Russkij biografičeskij slovar ' ; abbr. РБС / RBS ) is a Russian-language biographical reference work . It was published by the Imperial Russian Historical Society (Императорское Русское историческое общество) under the direction of editor-in-chief Alexander Polovtsov . The reference work was published in 25 volumes from 1896 to 1918 and is considered to be one of the most comprehensive Russian biographical sources for the period of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
