The Nigoglia (Piedmontese: Niguja ) is a river in northern Italy. The almost two-kilometer-long river forms the only outflow of Lake Orta , is channeled underground for about 1/3 of its route and flows into the Strona just before it flows into the Toce , which flows into Lake Maggiore .

As the only one of the great Italian lakes, the Orta has its drain to the north. The Nigoglia runs through the city center of Omegna before it meets the Strona in the urban area. The inflow into the river is regulated by a barrage. The average inflow in the Nigoglia is 4.83 m³ / s.

The catchment area of the Nigoglias, like that of Lake Orta, is 118 km² and consists of the mountains around the lake.

The fact that the river flows to the north and thus behaves differently than other rivers in the area is honored in Omegna with a saying in Piedmontese, which is supposed to confirm the uniqueness and independence of the city. The pronunciation can be found on the town hall and was immortalized in literary terms by the Omegnesi Giovanno Rodari in his book C'era due volte il barone Lamberto :

* La Niguja la va in su. E la legg'a la femon nu;

(German for example: the Nigoglia flows upwards and we make the laws. )
