Gianni Rodari (born October 23, 1920 in Omegna (Novara), † April 14, 1980 in Rome ) was an Italian writer who mainly wrote children's books .

Life

Raised in Gavirate ( Varese ), he entered the seminary of St. Peter of Seveso in Milan in 1931 , which he left in 1934. From 1939 he studied at the University of Milan . In May 1944 he joined the PCI .

From 1945 he worked as a journalist for L'Ordine Nuovo , the party organ of the PCI Varese. From 1947 he worked for L'Unità . In 1950 he founded the children's magazine Pioniere , for which he wrote until it was discontinued in 1962. On April 25, 1953 he married Maria Teresa Ferretti, on December 13 of the same year he founded the magazine Avanguardia . Between 1954 and 1969 Rodari worked for various periodicals and newspapers, wrote articles and columns for children; he traveled several times to the Soviet Union .

Rodari received the Hans Christian Andersen Prize for youth literature in 1970 . He justified his work in the field of youth literature with his socialist ideals: Peace and freedom for all people. He hoped to educate young people to “reflect” through his works and wanted to help them to evaluate the world appropriately. For Rodari, the most desirable goal was "to see the children of this world smile". Rodari was committed to early childhood education and was the source of ideas for Reggio education. Here he promoted the children's ability to tell stories through the “fantastic binomial”, as he described it in 1973 in his book “Grammar of Fantasy”.

On April 10, 1980, Rodari, just returned from a trip to the Soviet Union, was admitted to a Roman hospital because of a vein occlusion. He died of a heart attack four days later.

The asteroid (2703) Rodari , discovered in 1979, was named after him in 1985.
