Jauch (Uri family)

Jauch is the name of a long-established family in the canton of Uri that has been documented since the end of the 14th century. Members of the sex were active as military entrepreneurs in royal Spanish and Neapolitan-Sicilian services and achieved political importance in Switzerland .

Bailiff Hans Jauch (before 1500–1568) won the battle of Kappel in 1531 as leader of the vanguard of the army of the Catholic towns , in which the Swiss reformer Huldrych Zwingli was killed.

Altdorfer tribe

Hans Jauch's children connected with noble families in Uri. Sebastian Heinrich Jauch (1650–1708) was elected regional governor in 1707 and settled in Altdorf. This branch rose to become one of the leading Uri families.

Military entrepreneur in royal Spanish service

Sebastian Heinrich Jauch's son Johann Sebastian Jauch (1674-1731) 1721 was bailiff to Sargans and 1729-1731 state governor and 1731 Landammann . He worked as a military entrepreneur and owned companies in Spanish service in the regiments of Salis and Bessler.

Johann Sebastian Jauch's sons were Johann Joseph Anton Jauch (1714–1780), Lieutenant Colonel in Spanish service, Karl Josef Jauch (1728–1783), initially captain in Spanish service, 1780 Landammann and Joseph Stephan Jauch (1724–1801), 1755 –68 Landessäckelmeister, 1768–70 Landammann. 1770–71 and 1787–88 Landvogt in Thurgau.

Carlos Maria Jauch (1806–1890), son of the captain in Spanish service Joseph Leonz Jauch, was captain general of Aragon since 1874 and a member of the highest military and naval tribunal.

Military entrepreneur in the Neapolitan-Sicilian service

Johann Sebastian Jauch's brother Karl Franz Jauch (1679–1743) owned the Bessler regiment , which was in Spanish service . When Don Carlos was crowned King of Naples and Sicily as Charles VII in 1735 , he raised a regiment for Neapolitan services at the request of the king. He was a brigadier since 1739 . In 1740 he was the most important military entrepreneur in Uri.

Karl Franz Jauch's son was Karl Florian Jauch (1712–1780), who inherited his father's Neapolitan regiment and in 1776 became lieutenant general . His son Karl Eduard Jauch (1759-1802) initially inherited the regiment and then became Field Marshal of the Kingdom of Both Sicilies.

More family members

Emanuel Jauch (1759–1805) was a cotton entrepreneur. In 1802 he took part in the Consulta in Paris as Uri's envoy , and in 1803 he led the introduction of the mediation constitution in Uri.

Franz Jauch (1807–1867) became a federal judge in 1848.

Giovanni Jauch (1806–1877) was a. a. 1848–51 and 1855–72 National Councilor, 1847 colonel in the Sonderbund War , President of the Ticino National Bank, 1855 State Councilor and State Secretary.

Father Jakob Josef Jauch (1802–59), born in Russia and sponsored by cardinals and bishops, worked as an agricultural pioneer in Balzers, Liechtenstein from 1852–56 , was a field preacher and is known as the lyricist of the Liechtenstein national anthem “ Above the Young Rhine ”.

The Jauch house in Altdorf

The house, built in 1550, was acquired in 1725 by the then governor of Sargans, Johann Sebastian Jauch (1674–1731). It is considered to be the oldest and most valuable town house in terms of art and culture in the canton of Uri. (→ See list of cultural assets in Altdorf UR )

After the Russian general Alexander Wassiljewitsch Suworow had captured the Gotthard Pass from the French during the Second Coalition War on his retreat through Switzerland in 1799 , he took u. a. Quarters in the Jauchschen house in Altdorf, which has since been called the Suworow house. The house is located on Via Suworow , a Swiss cultural hiking trail that follows the historical footsteps of the Russian general Suworow during his campaign in autumn 1799 across the Swiss Alps.

Today the property is owned by the Karl Jauch Foundation.
