Franz Vinzenz Schmid

Franz Vinzenz Schmid (born May 27, 1758 in Altdorf ; † May 8, 1799 in Flüelen ) was a Swiss chronicler , politician and rebel leader .

biography

Franz Vinzenz Schmid was born in 1758 as the son of Landammann Karl Franz Schmid. In 1778 he was elected state rifle master by the local community. In 1782 he received the title of Oberstlandeswachtmeister and from 1784 he worked as a land clerk. When Uri was assigned to the canton of Waldstätte during the Helvetic Republic in 1798 , he was given the post of board member and canton clerk. He was an opponent of the Helvetic Republic and when an uprising broke out in the spring of 1799, he led the rebels. He fell on May 8, 1799.

Franz Vinzenz Schmid published the General History of the Free State of Ury . The first part, which deals with the time up to the Sempacherbrief (1393), was published in Zug in 1788, the second part, which goes up to the Stanser Verkommnis (1481), he published in 1790. The scientific accuracy of this work was already in the 19th century doubted. Johannes von Müller already doubts the reliability of the sources (especially Franz Guillimann ). Theodor von Liebenau writes: "Real and fictitious documents and chronicles are so wonderfully mixed up here that the first volume of the work in particular can only be used with the greatest caution".
