Hanns In der Gand , actually Ladislaus Krupski , (born February 25, 1882 in La Vernaz , Savoy ; † May 24, 1947 in Zumikon , Canton of Zurich ) was a Swiss folk song collector and soldier singer .

Hanns In der Gand attended grammar school in Lucerne , then began to study philology at the University of Neuchâtel and finally trained as a singer at the Conservatory in Frankfurt am Main and in Munich . He then worked for three years as a court actor in Altenburg ( Saxony-Altenburg ), but returned to Switzerland during the First World War and became a soldier singer in the Swiss Army . In der Gands father was Polish, the mother was German. He took the name of Uri (after Ernst Zahn's novel hero Albin Indergand ) in order to have easier access to the locals as a folk song collector.

Between the two world wars, In der Gand collected folk songs in all linguistic areas of Switzerland, in Lower Valais and in the Bündner Oberland also instrumental folk music and folk instruments. He sang the folk songs he had collected and accompanied himself on the lute. In this way he ensured their dissemination. During the Second World War, Hanns In der Gand also worked as a soldier singer ( spiritual national defense ). His essay Folk Musical Instruments of Switzerland from 1937 became the guideline for the more recent research of the 1970s. The best known song recorded by him is La petite Gilberte de Courgenay . It was written and composed in the winter of 1915/1916 by the military musicians from Entlebuch, Robert Lustenberger and Oskar Portmann.

Hanns In der Gand's estate is in the Swiss Folk Song Archive in Basel. In Zumikon, a fountain and a street are reminiscent of Hanns In der Gand.
