Ernst Zahn (around 1900), etching by Johann Lindner

Ernst Zahn (born January 24, 1867 in Zurich ; † February 12, 1952 in Meggen LU ) was a Swiss writer .

Life

Ernst Zahn was born the son of a hotelier from Bavaria . He grew up in Zurich in his father's restaurant in the Baugarten and, after years of apprenticeship in England and Italy, took over his father's business in Göschenen in 1887 . At the same time he became a member of the municipal council and later a member of the Uri district administrator . In 1893 he married Lina Fäh.

In 1913 he was elected President of the Swiss Writers' Association (SSV). He had to resign from this office the following year as a result of his enthusiastic support for the German Reich in the outbreak of the First World War . In 1916 he gave up his hotelier profession and then lived as a freelance writer in Meggen , where he had a house built called Stilles Ufer , and in Zurich.

As a native poet, however, he had his greatest success in Germany, especially with the depiction of the impressive alpine world. This is how his novel Frau Sixta was made into a film .

After the Second World War , Zahn was largely forgotten. He found his final resting place in the Enzenbühl cemetery in Zurich .

On January 24, 1937, the community made Meggen Ernst Zahn an honorary citizen. A bust of him is on the Meggener Seeacherplatz.
