Life

Erna Schillig grew up in Altdorf. Before she devoted herself to art, the trained nurse worked in Geneva and Château-d'Oex . For health reasons she returned to Central Switzerland in 1925 and worked as an artist in the studio of the painter Heinrich Danioth . She spent the summer months on the Klausen Pass , where her parents ran a hotel. In the 2014 film Danioth - The Devil Painter , this time of her life and her collaboration with Danioth is the theme. On the Klausen she met the German painter and professor August Babberger, who had spent the summer in his studio on the Balmalp for years. From 1927 to 1930 she attended Babberger's class for decorative painting and wall painting at the Badische Landeskunstschule Karlsruhe . Schillig, Babberger and his wife Anna Maria Babberger-Tobler created a joint work: the seasons book , which was hand-colored by Schillig.

In the following years she took private lessons and became his colleague and partner. Together they painted the Höfli chapel in Altdorf in 1932 and the artist's book Vom Urnersee over the Klausenpass with woodcuts by Schilling and texts by Babberger was published. Schillig and Babberger also wrote the book Das Paradies der Höhensucher. Summer notes from the Klausenpasshöhe . Inspired by the high mountain landscapes of Uri, many pastel paintings, pen and pencil drawings were created in the 1920s and 1930s, in which an abstract, rhythmic color language can be recognized. She became known for her wall paintings in plastering technique and her tapestries. Her costume carpet was shown at the 1937 World Exhibition in Paris in the Swiss pavilion. After Babberg's death and the outbreak of World War II, Schillig worked as a nurse in an internment camp in Zug. From 1947 to 1967 she headed the textile department of the School of Applied Arts in Lucerne and helped it gain a reputation. From 1967 until her death in 1993 she lived secluded in Altdorf.

The Haus für Kunst Uri showed her works from March 7th to May 17th, 2015 in the spring exhibition Heinrich Danioth and companions.
