Chapel of St. Anna

The St. Anna Chapel is a Roman Catholic chapel in Altdorf in the canton of Uri . The building, erected in 1596, originally served as an ossuary , stylistically it can be assigned to the late Renaissance . The chapel stands in front of the south facade of the parish church of St. Martin and is classified as a cultural asset of national importance . The Altdorf church district also includes the cemetery and the Ölberg chapel behind the parish church.

The builder of the church was in all probability the Lucerne master stoneworker Anton Isenmann (referred to in contemporary sources as "Master Antoni"). The chapel dedicated to St. Anne has two floors; both levels have their own entrance, but are not spatially connected to each other. The architectural design belongs to the late Renaissance style, but the tall and slender structure without buttresses suggests the early baroque , which was first fully demonstrated in the following decade when the parish church was rebuilt. A continuous roof ridge connects the building with the recessed polygonal choir .

The upper floor has lancet windows on the long sides, the entrance portal is rounded. Inside, the nave and choir are separated by tongue walls, the resulting opening looks like a large open gate. On the west wall hangs a painting by the Flemish painter Denys Calvaert , who was then working in Bologna ; the order in Altdorf came about through the mediation of Jakob Arnold (captain of the papal guard there). The motif of the picture is the Lamentation of Christ . Particularly noteworthy is the final parapet designed by the sculptor Johannes Dub in 1596 against the descent into the lower chapel. As memento mori performed balustrade is not only in Switzerland, but far beyond, unique. In the large middle field there is a memorial for the client: “CASPAR ROMANVS / BESLER. DERZIT / KILCHENVOGT VND / BAWMEISTER.DES / GOTSHVS.1596 “.

Due to its location on a mountain slope, the lower floor can only be seen from the church square below. The low hall is vaulted by an almost round-arched barrel. A forged iron grille separates the foremost part of the room; It is adorned with the alliance coat of arms of the two founders: Landammann Emanuel Stanislaus Püntener (1682–1742) and his wife Maria Anna Katharina Lusser (1689–1764).
