Eduard Wymann (born June 4, 1870 in Beckenried , † January 10, 1956 in Altdorf ) was a Swiss Catholic priest, state archivist of the canton of Uri and author of historical, especially church history, articles.

Life

From 1884 to 1890 Wymann attended primary school in his hometown. He spent his high school at the Capuchin College in Stans (1st and 2nd grade) and at the Benedictine collegiate school in Engelberg (3rd and VIth grade). In 1890/91 he studied philosophy at the Episcopal Lyceum Eichstätt . Here he was a student friend of Josef Müller , who later became a collector of sagas from Uri, with whom he had a lifelong friendship. From 1891 to 1894 he continued his studies in the priestly profession with theology at the archbishop's seminary ( Helvetic College ) in Milan , where there were free places for Swiss students. He was ordained a priest in Milan Cathedral on May 19, 1894 , in order to prepare for practical priestly work until 1895 with the IV. Theological course in the St. Luzi seminary in Chur, GR.

In the diocese of Chur he worked as a parish assistant in Alpnach from 1895 to 1899 . From the winter semester 1899/1900 to the summer semester 1902 he studied history at the University of Freiburg im Üechtland and - until 1906 - at the University of Zurich . In Zurich he was also a spiritual director at the Elisabethenheim. On May 26, 1906 he became the state archivist of the canton Uri and at the same time chaplain of the nobles von Beroldingen and owner of the Schmid'schen benefice; A "chaplain 's room" was set up for him in the Beroldingen castle . In 1908 the doctorate to Dr. phil. at the University of Freiburg i. Üe. with “summa cum laude”; He wrote his dissertation on "The fate of Catholic worship in Zurich from the end of the Reformation to the establishment of a new Catholic parish". In 1913 he took on part-time editing of the Historical New Year's Gazette of the Canton of Uri and in 1916 was elected President of the Association for History and Antiquities of Uri . He held another office in the Catholic Volksverein in Switzerland; there he was actuary of the historical section. He went on educational trips to Italy, France, Palestine and the East Bank. He wrote numerous historical publications, especially magazine articles, some in Italian; he mainly dealt with Karl Borromeo . In 1950 he retired as state archivist. His private archive is under the signature P-112 in the Uri State Archives. Part of his estate is kept in the Lucerne State Archives.

personality

“Prelate Wymann was a person of his own stamp, an original of the most precious kind. Sarcastic spirit and the joy of telling stories, contempt for everything conventional and bureaucratic characterize his personality. He was extremely amiable and, despite an occasional 'crash', seldom loyal to his friends. Through generous foundations, he, who personally lived very simply, testified to his selflessness. "
