Barnabas Halem 'Imana

Barnabas R. Halem 'Imana (* 1929 in Rulangara ; † January 3, 2016 ) was a Ugandan clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Kabale .

Life

Barnabas R. Halem 'Imana attended elementary school in Mutorere and from 1943 the minor seminary in Kitabi in the Bushenyi district. In 1950 he entered the Great Seminary in Katigondo. After completing his theological and philosophical studies, he was ordained a priest for the diocese of Mbarara on December 7, 1958 . He was pastor in Mutolere as well as editor and editor-in-chief of The Ageeteraine Newspaper . After completing a doctorate in canon law in Rome in 1966, he became Secretary General of the Bishops' Conference of Uganda.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on May 29, 1969 first bishop of Kabale and personally donated his episcopal ordination on August 1 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Sergio Pignedoli , Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples , and Emmanuel Wamala , Archbishop of Kampala . As a member of the Tutsi ethnic group, he was the first native bishop in the Kabale diocese. On July 15, 1994, Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation for health reasons.

He was committed to AIDS / HIV prevention, especially in Ankole . From 1998 to 2011 he was chairman of the Uganda National AIDS Commission (UAC).
