Emmanuel Cardinal Wamala (born December 15, 1926 in Kamaggwa , Uganda ) is retired Archbishop of Kampala .

Life

Emmanuel Wamala studied in Katigondo and Rome trays Catholic Theology , Philosophy and Social Sciences and received on 21 December 1957 in Rome, the sacrament of the priesthood by Luigi Traglia . Two of his brothers also became priests. He passed licentiate examinations in Catholic theology and social sciences and deepened his studies in Rome, Kampala and at Notre Dame University in South Bend , Indiana ( USA ). From 1960 to 1981 he worked in the Masaka diocese as a parish chaplain, school inspector, university teacher and vicar general . Pope Paul VI bestowed the title of Chaplain to His Holiness on May 25, 1977 .

On July 17, 1981, Pope John Paul II appointed him first bishop of the newly founded diocese of Kiyinda-Mityana . The episcopal ordination donated him Emmanuel Kiwanuka Cardinal Nsubuga same year on November 22: co-consecrators were Adrian Kivumbi Ddungu , the Bishop of Masaka in Uganda, and Josef Stimpfle , Bishop of Augsburg . From 1986 to 1994 he was President of the Bishops' Conference of Uganda. On June 21, 1988, he was initially appointed coadjutor in the Archdiocese of Kampala by John Paul II , and on February 8, 1990, he became Archbishop of this diocese.

John Paul II accepted Emmanuel Wamala on November 26, 1994 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Sant'Ugo in the college of cardinals . Cardinal Wamala was a participant in the 2005 conclave , in which Benedict XVI. was chosen. On August 19, 2006, he accepted Wamala's application for resignation due to reasons of age. At the conclave in 2013 , he did not participate because he had exceeded the age limit of 80 years.
