Christian Wiyghan Cardinal Tumi (born October 15, 1930 in Kikaikelaki , Cameroon ; † April 3, 2021 in Douala ) was a Cameroonian clergyman and Archbishop of Douala and cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church . Tumi was considered one of the most important figures in Cameroon's anglophone crisis .

Life

Christian Tumi attended several seminars in Nigeria and at the Universities of Lyon and Freiburg trays Catholic theology and philosophy and educational sciences. He was ordained a priest on April 17, 1966 and was appointed pastor in the Archdiocese of Bamenda for the next two years . From 1967 to 1969 he worked as a teacher at the boys' college in Souppo-Bouéa . After further studies in Europe he worked in the years 1973 to 1979 as a rain of Seminary of Bambui and as a pastor in the Archdiocese of Bamenda.

Christian Wiyghan Tumi was accepted into the College of Cardinals by John Paul II in the consistory of June 28, 1988 as cardinal priest with the titular church Santi Martiri dell'Uganda a Poggio Ameno and was appointed Archbishop of Douala on August 31, 1991.

Tumi was considered the leading head of the political opposition in Cameroon and the most important opponent of President Paul Biya . In January 2018, he criticized Biya's struggle against separatists, stating: "You do not bring peace through violence and violence creates violence". In November 2020, Tumi was kidnapped and released in Cameroon - allegedly by separatists.

He took part in the 2005 conclave after the death of John Paul II .
