The Archdiocese of Garoua ( Latin Archidioecesis Garuensis ) is a Roman Catholic archdiocese based in Garoua in Cameroon .
history
Pope Pius XII founded the Apostolic Prefecture Garoua on January 9, 1947 from cessions of territory of the Apostolic Vicariate Foumban . On March 24, 1953, she was raised to the rank of Vicariate Apostolic .
With the bull Dum tantis on April 18, 1950, it was raised to the rank of diocese, which was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Yaoundé as a suffragan diocese. With the Apostolic Constitution Eo magis catholica on March 18, 1982 it was elevated to the rank of Metropolitan Archdiocese.
It lost parts of its territory in favor of the establishment of the following dioceses:
- May 17, 1951 to the Moundou Apostolic Prefecture ;
- December 19, 1956 to the Apostolic Prefecture of Pala ;
- March 11, 1968 to the Apostolic Prefecture of Maroua-Mokolo ;
- March 11, 1968 to the Apostolic Prefecture of Yagoua ;
- November 19, 1982 to the diocese of Ngaoundéré .
