Cyprian Kizito Lwanga

Cyprian Kizito Lwanga (born January 19, 1953 in Naggalama , Uganda , † found on April 3, 2021 in Kampala ) was a Ugandan clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Kampala . As President of the Uganda Joint Christian Council (UJCC), he was also a political figure in Uganda.

Life

Cyprian Kizito Lwanga studied philosophy at the seminary in Katigondo from 1972 to 1974 and then theology at the Ggaba seminary in Kampala. He received on 9 April 1978 with the Archbishop of Kampala, Emmanuel Cardinal Kiwanuka Nsubuga , the sacrament of the priesthood and studied one year later Administrative Sciences and Languages at the University of Clermont-Ferrand . In 1994 he received his doctorate in Canon Law from the Pontifical University of Santa Croce in Rome . He was active in pastoral care in the Archdiocese of Kampala .

On November 30, 1996, Pope John Paul II appointed him first bishop of the diocese of Kasana-Luweero, which was established on the same date . The Archbishop of Kampala, Cardinal Emmanuel Wamala , donated him episcopal ordination on March 1, 1997 ; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Jinja , Joseph B. Willigers MHM , and the Bishop of Fort Portal , Paul Lokiru Kalanda . Pope Benedict XVI appointed him on August 19, 2006 Archbishop of Kampala. The inauguration took place on September 30 of the same year.

Cyprian Kizito Lwanga was President of the Uganda Joint Christian Council (UJCC). In 2020, he called on the government to postpone the 2021 presidential election by three years due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the tense political situation. In February 2021, he warned of a new dictatorship under President Yoweri Museveni , who was re-elected in January . Immediately before his death, on April 2, 2021, in a Good Friday ecumenical celebration of the religious leaders of the Catholic, Orthodox and Anglican churches in St. Paul's Cathedral in Namirembe, Lwanga urged the Ugandan people to “develop a new culture of love and respect for the human To foster life and dignity ”and“ denounce the corruption, hatred, tribalism and murder that have prevailed unprecedented since last year ”.

Archbishop Lwanga was found dead in his apartment in Kampala on April 3, 2021.
