The Axentunnel is a railway tunnel project in Switzerland , which is part of the major AlpTransit project and crosses under the Fronalpstock and the Rophaien along the Axenfelsen between Brunnen in Canton Schwyz and Flüelen in Canton Uri .
A shorter tunnel of this name already exists on the Gotthard Railway in the area of Lake Uri , which was built during the Second World War as part of the double-track expansion of the Gotthard Railway. The new project envisages bypassing Flüelen through a bypass tunnel connected to the existing Axentunnel , whereby the new Axentunnel would flow into the bypass tunnel. This would guarantee the connection of the existing track to the new structure, which in some preliminary studies was also called a clasp . This Flüelen railway bypass may even be constructed using opencast mining. In this variant, the NEAT Axentunnel would have a length of around 10 kilometers.
Connection to the Gotthard Base Tunnel
If the Berg long closed variant is implemented to bypass Altdorf UR , which the Federal Council fundamentally decided to do in 2002, then this means that the Gotthard Base Tunnel and the new Axentunnel would be connected by another tunnel structure, creating an uninterrupted tunnel section of around 75 kilometers in length would be created. The connection to the valley route with a planned Uri cantonal train station on the area of today's Altdorf train station would be made possible with two branch structures. There is an opportunity here to guarantee travelers to and from Obwalden and Nidwalden a high-quality connection to AlpTransit.
In the Gotthard Base Tunnel, which went into operation in 2016, the junctions have long been integrated into the mountain variant and may be built in the next few years. In the Axentunnel, a branch about one kilometer behind the tunnel portal to the south is also planned.
realization
Construction on the new Axentunnel will not begin before 2030.
Felderboden train station
After the Axentunnel construction, the former long-distance station Brunnen would lose its inter- regional traffic, as the place would be bypassed to the north. One idea envisages the dismantling of the Schwyz and Brunnen stations to become S-Bahn stations. Instead, a new long-distance train station in Felderboden on the municipality of Ingenbohl was supposed to start long-distance traffic. The location should be somewhere between the Schränggigen and Unterschönenbuch tunnel portals .
