Hirzel railway tunnel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hirzel railway tunnel is a project for a single-lane railway tunnel between the cantons of Zurich and Zug in Switzerland , which is part of the 2nd phase of the large-scale project New Railway Alpine Transversal (NEAT, later AlpTransit) and is intended to connect Eastern Switzerland to the NEAT . It would enable the direct journey from the Litti area near Baar ZG under the Hirzel in an eastward direction to the left bank of Lake Zurich near Au / Wädenswil ZH in the direction of Pfäffikon SZ / Chur . A precise route has not yet been determined.

The Hirzel railway tunnel is seen as a political compromise in order to win the approval of Eastern Switzerland for the AlpTransit project. From 2012 onwards , 200 million CHF from the FinöV fund were made available for the construction . From today's perspective, it is considered superfluous, among other things because there are hardly any freight trains on this route and the improvement achieved by the tunnel is not significant (insufficient cost-benefit ratio). That is why there is great pressure in Parliament to leave this out for reasons of economy.

The construction of a branch from Zimmerberg Tunnel 2 is currently being discussed. It would be implemented in the next expansion step when the Zimmerberg tunnel is completed in STEP AS 2035. According to this, the construction of this branch - also known as the Melibach tunnel - is not planned until the beginning of 2040
