The Altdorf train station (also Altdorf canton train station) is the train station of the Uri capital Altdorf . The station, located on the Gotthard Railway and opened in 1882, has been the regional public transport hub of the Uri Reuss Valley since December 2021 . Since then, it has also been served by intercity trains that run through the Gotthard base tunnel into Ticino .

story

First train station

Former reception building (1964)

Altdorf received its first train station when the Gotthard Railway opened in 1882. The project of the Jura-Gotthard Railway , which would have branched off in Altdorf and would have led via Lucerne and Langenthal to Delémont , did not materialize.

When planning the Gotthard Railway, the importance of Altdorf as the main and market town was neglected in favor of a straight line from Flüelen to Erstfeld , which is why the train station is a good kilometer from the village center. To connect the village to the train station, Bahnhofstrasse was built, an approximately 1,100-meter-long, dead-straight street that leads across the then sparsely populated area. The Gotthard express trains also stopped in Flüelen due to the tourist importance of the Flüelen train station due to the connection to the scheduled boats of the Lake Lucerne Shipping Company . In order to connect Altdorf with the Flüeler Bahnhof, the Altdorf – Flüelen tram was put into operation in 1906 , and in 1951 it was converted to bus service. With the connection of Altdorf to Flüelen station, Altdorf station lost more and more of its relevance for the population.

In 1994, the regional trains in the canton of Uri were replaced by a bus service, which ceased passenger transport. Since the S-Bahn Zentralschweiz was launched on December 12, 2004, the S2 of the Zug urban railway ( Baar Lindenpark - Erstfeld ) has served the station every hour.

The goods shed to the north of the reception building was renovated in 2009, extended to the north and converted into a service center with an SBB travel center, a kiosk, a convenience shop and public toilet facilities. In 2010, a covered central platform with a pedestrian underpass was inaugurated so that travelers heading north no longer have to cross any tracks. The station square was also redesigned.

Canton train station

Idea and planning

In connection with the construction of the Gotthard Base Tunnel , the canton of Uri asked to be able to benefit from the tunnel and thus the fast connections to Ticino. In December 2012, the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) and the Federal Office of Transport assured the canton of two-hour intercity stops in Uri.

To this end, consideration was given to upgrading Altdorf station from the S-Bahn stop to the “Kantonsbahnhof”, where intercity trains will stop from December 2021 and a regional hub for public transport will be created in the valley floor. Furthermore, the Eyschachen area, which is southwest of the train station, is to be developed into an industrial, commercial and service area. The parts of the project financed by the municipality of Altdorf and the canton of Uri were approved by a large majority in two referendums on May 21 and July 2, 2017, respectively.

Project and construction

The Kantonsbahnhof project consists of four sub-projects. The SBB are extending the platforms on tracks 1 and 4 from around 220 to 420 meters so that the intercity and Eurocity trains , which are up to 400 meters long , can stop at the station. The canton of Uri is financing the adaptation of the street, the bus station east with six stop edges and two additional stop edges on the west side of the station on Reussacherstrasse (bus station west). The municipality of Altdorf is financing the extension of the pedestrian underpass to the west in order to open up the two bus stops and the new Eyschachen development area. Finally, the Urner Kantonalbank is building a new reception building on Bahnhofplatz.

The canton of Uri and the SBB were looking for an investor to build the new station building. The Urner Kantonalbank (UKB) took over the project and carried out an architectural competition for the “new building at Bahnhofplatz 1”, which is to replace the previous reception building and the old Bahnhof Hotel. A service building was required which would enable UKB to relocate its headquarters there, but also to rent parts or the entire building to third parties. The ground floor of the building, which is located directly between platform 1 and the East Bus Station, is supposed to have a "public character". The first floor should be designed to be "semi-public" and enable the various tenants to receive customers. The nine projects submitted by local and national architectural offices were evaluated in summer 2017, with the Urig project by ARGE Buchner Bründler Planer AG / Proplaning AG being awarded the first prize of 40,000 francs. A five-storey building is being created, consisting of the public ground floor, the semi-public first floor, three office floors and an attic structure. The underground car park is accessed from the south via Rynächtstrasse. Towards the station square, the upper floors protrude beyond the ground floor and thus enable the roofing of the two bus stop edges, which are located directly on the building. A canopy will be built on the track side to protect travelers from the weather. In May 2019 UKB decided to definitely move its headquarters to Bahnhofplatz 1. This is expected to take place in spring 2022.

The groundbreaking for the construction took place on September 9, 2019. Between December 2020 and June 2021, no trains stopped at the station, so that the platforms could be expanded to the 420 meters length required for intercity trains. The connections were ensured by a replacement bus Flüelen –Altdorf– Erstfeld . The bus stop was also temporarily relocated to the farm mat 150 meters south of the train station.

Installation

Since the timetable change on December 13, 2020, the station has been referred to in the timetable documents and on signs as Altdorf UR instead of Altdorf .

The extended platforms have been in operation since June 13, 2021 and the station is again served by Interregio lines 26 and 46 ( Basel / Zurich - Locarno ) and the S2 of the Zug Stadtbahn ( Baar Lindenpark - Erstfeld). The temporary bus stop on the farm mat was lifted and four of the six retaining edges of the East Bus Station were put into operation. A new park-and-ride facility and 150 new bicycle parking spaces are also available on the west side .

On December 12, 2021, it was finally opened as a canton station. In addition to the new two-hour stops on Intercity Line 2 ( Zurich HB - Lugano ), the bus network was also changed so that the station is now served by seven regional bus and post bus lines and two supraregional long-distance bus lines ( Tell and Winkelried buses). Due to the corona pandemic, the planned opening ceremonies had to be dispensed with.

Investments

In addition to the two continuous main tracks, the station has three outer platform tracks (tracks 1, 4 and 5) as well as various sidings. The platforms of tracks 1 and 4 have the full length of 420 meters, so that intercity trains with a length of up to 400 meters can stop at the station. On the north side (in the direction of Flüelen ) the station has two tracks, on the south side (in the direction of Erstfeld / Gotthard Base Tunnel ) it has three tracks. A pedestrian underpass connects the station square with the central platform and the west side of the station. In terms of rail technology, the station has been a commercial stopping point since the introduction of ETCS Level 2 on August 15, 2015.

For a long time, the station was primarily used for freight traffic. To the southwest of the passenger station are the former federal grain stores designed by the architects Eduard Züblin and Robert Maillart , which had a rail connection. On the west side there is a loading ramp from Gasperini AG, which is used to load railway ballast onto freight wagons. There is also an unloading system to the north-east of the platform for the delivery of heating oil and diesel from Hubrol AG, which had to be rebuilt in 2020 due to the platform extension.

Bus stops

The Altdorf UR, Bahnhof Ost stop (until 2021: Altdorf UR, Bahnhof ) is to the east of the reception building on Bahnhofplatz. It consists of two retaining edges directly on the reception building (edges A and B) and four retaining edges on a covered central island (edges C – F). Three of the six retaining edges are designed for articulated buses (18 meters), the remaining three for solo buses . All retaining edges are designed to be handicapped accessible.

The Altdorf UR, Bahnhof West stop is on the west side of the station at the end of the pedestrian underpass. It consists of three retaining edges and was opened in 2021. At the edges X and Y keep the intercantonal bus lines to edge Z any Rail replacement buses .

rail

The station is served every hour by the Interregio lines 26 and 46 as well as the S2 of the Zug urban railway, which results in an approximate half-hourly service to Arth-Goldau and, with changes, also to Zurich and Lucerne . In addition, Intercity Line 2 stops every two hours and thus enables fast connections through the Gotthard Base Tunnel to Ticino .

Developments around the train station

To the southwest of the train station, the Werkmatt Uri area (formerly «Urner Talboden development focus ») is being developed as an industrial and commercial area with an area of 120,000 square meters. In addition to the buildings of the former federal grain magazine with the historic buildings by the architects Eduard Züblin and Robert Maillart and some flat storage halls, large amounts of building land are available for new settlements. The area, which was previously partially owned by the federal government, was bought by the canton of Uri and is now being offered to companies for settlement. Together with the construction of the west-east connection (WOV), the Altdorf Süd half-connection is also to be built on the A2 motorway in the future in order to optimally develop the area.

The residential and commercial buildings Vena and Cubo were built directly west of the train station on Reussacherstrasse between 2018 and 2021 .

Others

The Altdorf station is planned by the SBB in the “Intervention Concept North” for the Gotthard Base Tunnel as a meeting point for people rescued from the tunnel.
