Waldemar Kolmsperger the Younger (born September 15, 1881 in Munich ; † May 20, 1954 ibid) was a German neo-baroque painter .

Life and works

Waldemar Kolmsperger's father of the same name, Waldemar Kolmsperger (1852–1943), was his son's first teacher. He then studied from October 1900 at the Munich Art Academy in Munich with Martin Feuerstein and Wilhelm von Diez .

Like his father, Waldemar Kolmsperger the Younger mainly created monumental frescoes in the Baroque (Neo-Baroque) style.

His altarpieces for the parish church in Cham date from 1913 ; In 1914 he painted an altarpiece for the Carmelite Church in Straubing . In 1922 he painted, among other things, wall and ceiling pictures for the Übersee church in Upper Bavaria and ceiling paintings for the church in Eberfing as well as altarpieces for the parish church of Birkenried .

In 1923 he decorated the church in Au in Vorarlberg with eleven ceiling paintings. The main picture was the Vorarlbergia Sancta. In 1925 he created ceiling paintings for the Theresienheim in Fulda . He provided the Church of Reconciliation in Völklingen with frescoes depicting Christ in the clouds above industrial chimneys and members of the parish, including Carl Röchling , the founder of Röchling's iron and steel works .

In 1926 the fresco "The Glory of Saints Peter and Paul" was created for the Catholic parish church in Seinsheim in Lower Franconia .

He often supported his father in the execution of large paintings, e.g. B. in St. Ignaz in Mainz. In 1930/31 father and son painted the dome of St. Josef in Reinhausen . The monumental painting in it shows Joseph as a helper and intercessor for the people.

St. Barbara in Munich-Neuhausen carries Kolmsperger's facade paintings.

Kolmsperger created the monumental ceiling painting (9.5 m × 25 m) "Apotheosis of Christ in Heaven and Depiction of Hell" in the Dreikönigskirche Hittisau / Vorarlberg in 1941. It shows the last judgment in neo-baroque style with reference to the time of origin.

In addition to churches and secular buildings, Waldemar Kolmsperger the Elder and the Younger also decorated several steamers on the Hamburg-America Line with ceiling paintings. These included the ships Vaterland alias Leviathan , Bismarck and New York ; none of these steamers has survived.
