location

The station is located at the south-western end of the city center and comprises five platforms for passenger traffic .

history

Locomotive shed in Delémont

The station was opened on September 25, 1875, along with the section from Basel to Delsberg of the Jura Railway . A little over a year later, on October 15, 1876, the station became a junction when the Delémont- Glovelier section of the Delémont – Delle railway line opened. The extension of this line to Porrentruy was not put into operation until March 30, 1877. On December 16, 1876, the line to Moutier was opened. The Jura-Gotthard Railway to Lucerne should have been built from Delémont, but the project did not materialize.

On October 9, 1889, the Jura – Bern – Lucerne Railway commissioned the entrepreneur Otto Frey in Delémont to build a rotonde for 13 locomotives. The Rotonde was planned by the engineers Probst, Chappuis & Wolf from Nidau , and the cantonal road had to be moved to the west of the existing locomotive depot. The locomotive shed was expanded to a semicircle in 1900 and the office was also enlarged in 1922.

On September 8, 1944, Delémont station (along with Moûtier station) was bombed by the USAF. Allegedly, the pilots believed it was a railway system in nearby Alsace. Several people were injured and major damage was caused. In 1996/1997 the engine shed was completely renovated for the 150th anniversary of the Swiss Railways. The Rotonde has been the official location of the SBB Historic Foundation since 2001 .
