Schnottwil is a municipality in the Bucheggberg district in the canton of Solothurn in Switzerland .

Schnottwil is a community of residents and a civil parish (consisting of those entitled to home , regardless of the place of residence).

geography

Schnottwil lies at 502  m above sea level. M. , 16 km southwest of the canton capital Solothurn (air line). The clustered village extends in a promising location on the western slope of the Bucheggberg , on both sides of the Illigrabenbach, a source brook of the Eichibach, in the extreme southwest of the Solothurn Mittelland .

The area of the 7.2 km² municipal area comprises a section of the Molasse heights of the Bucheggberg. In the northwest, the area is part of the broad valley basin of the Eichibach (tributary of the Alte Aare ), which opens towards the west to the Bernese Seeland. From this valley level with the Rütenen and Eimatten corridors at the southern foot of the Städtiberg , the municipality extends southeast over the gently rising slope of Schnottwil to the plateau of the Bucheggberg with the headwaters of the Eichibach. This highland with the Spishubel ( 557  m above sea level ) and the height of Schoren (up to 590  m above sea level ) falls to the south with a densely wooded steep slope ( Oberwald and Kriegacher ) to the level of the Limpach valley and is through the erosion valley subdivided into a side stream of the Limpach. The southern boundary of the municipality is the road that runs along the northern edge of the Limpach plain. At 597  m above sea level M. is above the Aspiwäldchen east of Schnottwil, the highest point in the community. In 1997, 8% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 32% for forests and woodlands and 60% for agriculture.

Schnottwil includes the hamlet of Chappeli ( 507  m above sea level ) on the slope northeast of the village and a few individual farms. Neighboring communities of Schnottwil starting clockwise in the east are Biezwil and Messen in the canton of Solothurn as well as Wengi , Diessbach bei Büren , Büren an der Aare and Oberwil bei Büren in the canton of Bern .

population

With 1135 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018) Schnottwil is one of the smaller communities in the canton of Solothurn. 95.7% of the residents are German-speaking, 1.3% French-speaking and 0.9% speak Albanian (as of 2000). The population of Schnottwil was 660 in 1850 and 633 in 1900. During the 20th century, the population remained relatively constant in the range between 600 and 660 inhabitants. Only since 1985 (686 inhabitants) has a significant increase in population been recorded.

Authorities

The parish council consists of seven members and two substitutes. Mayor Stefan Schluep was elected to office in 2017.

economy

Schnottwil was a predominantly agricultural village until the middle of the 20th century . The water power of the village stream was previously used to operate mills and an oil mill. Even today, agriculture and fruit growing as well as cattle breeding have a certain place in the income structure of the population. Numerous other jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. In Schnottwil there are companies in the construction and transport industry, precision mechanics, mechanical engineering, wood processing, IT and the electrical industry, as well as other precision engineering workshops. In the last few decades the village has also developed into a residential community thanks to its attractive location. Many employees are therefore commuters who mainly work in the Biel , Lyss and Solothurn regions.

traffic

The community is very well developed in terms of transport. It lies at the intersection of the main roads from Zollikofen to Büren an der Aare and from Lyss to Lohn-Ammannsegg . The closest connections to the A5 (Solothurn-Biel) and A6 (Bern-Biel) motorways are each around 7 km from the town center. The village is connected to the public transport network through the Postbus courses, which serve the routes from Lyss to Schnottwil, from the Lohn-Lüterkofen train station to Schnottwil and from Solothurn via Büren an der Aare to Zollikofen, as well as the Bucheggberg on- call bus .

history

The first written mention of the place took place in 1261 under the name Snotwile . Later the names Snotenwiler (1264), Snottwil (1377) and Schnottwil (1398) appeared. The place name goes back to the personal name Snoto and means with the place name ending -wil as much as in the courtyards of Snoto.

Since the Middle Ages Schnottwil was under the rule of Buchegg, which was part of the Landgraviate of Burgundy . The Frienisberg and Fraubrunnen monasteries also had rich property in the municipality. The rule was acquired by Solothurn in 1391 and converted to the Bucheggberg Vogtei, making Schnottwil Solothurn.

Until 1798 the high level of jurisdiction lay with the Bernese district court in Zollikofen , while Schnottwil exercised the function as one of the four places of jurisdiction in the bailiwick. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), the village belonged to the Biberist district during the Helvetic and from 1803 to the Bucheggberg district. As a result of several dry years, which led to a food shortage, many villagers emigrated to America around the middle of the 19th century.

Attractions

In the old town center, some characteristic farmhouses (half-timbered buildings) from the 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved. The former schoolhouse with its bell tower on the village square dates from 1820 and was restored in 1975. The old oil mill has also been restored and equipped with a new water wheel. Schnottwil does not have its own church; it belongs to the parish of Oberwil bei Büren. A few remains of the wall of the former chapel are still visible at Gasthof Krone.

The Steigrüebli nature reserve is located on the eastern edge of the village. This quarry was used from the 15th century to quarry shell limestone, mainly millstones.
