geography
course
The source of the Lyssbach lies on the Rapperswiler plateau at about 574 m above sea level. M. on the southern outskirts of Moosaffoltern in the municipality of Rapperswil . At the beginning, the stream mostly flows in a convoluted direction to the southwest towards Lyssbachtal . At the hamlet of Lätti , it rises for around 160 meters to the surface for the first time before reaching the bottom of the valley . At the Schönbrunnen farm he just passes the Urtenen spring and turns to the northwest.
Shortly afterwards, at the confluence of the Hintelgraben , it comes to the surface again and now flows through an approximately 800-meter-wide valley , where it is mostly accompanied by a more or less thick forest edge. It runs along the northern floor of the valley and initially forms the border between Rapperswil and Schüpfen for around 2 km . A little north of Schwanden it crosses over completely to Schüpfer Boden and first passes the village on its northern settlement boundary before separating a quarter from the village center and taking up the approximately eight kilometers long Chüelibach . The valley is now getting narrower and reaches around 100 meters at its widest point.
It runs north of the hamlet Bundkofen and cross the municipal border with Grossaffoltern , where he simultaneously at Kosthofen the Alewilbach will flow from the left. About 500 meters downstream, a small canal branches off on its left bank, which meets the Lyssbach again at Suberg . The stream reaches Lyss , where shortly afterwards it takes up the Seebach and now flows through the industrial area of the small town. At the Seelandhalle he enters the Aare valley and crosses the settlement area. At the northern boundary of the settlement it again reaches an industrial area and a gravel pit on the right bank. Here it runs parallel to the Alte Aare, into which it only a little later at the ARA southwest of Busswil at 435 m above sea level. M. opens.
Catchment area
The catchment area of the Lyssbach measures 56.44 square kilometers, consisting of 55.9% agricultural area, 30.8% wooded area, 12.9% built-up area, 0.3% water and 0.1% unproductive area. The highest point is 820 m above sea level. M. in the Seiebergwald near Wahlendorf , the average altitude is 571 m above sea level. M.
Flood relief tunnel
The brook has repeatedly overflowed its banks in recent decades, which has led to severe flooding, especially in Lyss . In the summer of 2012, a flood relief tunnel was completed, which in Leen drains part of the water directly to the Alte Aare during heavy rainfall.
