The village is located at the foot of the Schwandenberg, on the Ölibach at 531 meters above sea level, it houses around 140 people and can be found between Münchenbuchsee and Schüpfen.

history

The name Schwanden was probably derived from "Schwende". "Schwende" is the old German expression for "to shrink" (= clearing of the forest ).

Schwanden is one of the oldest settlements in the region . It was first mentioned around the year 1150. It is said that once there was a wooden monastery of the Johanniter on the Chlosterhubel in Schwanden. In Einsiedeln Monastery there is an inscription that mentions the noble von Schwanden. In 1271 the "Steg zu Schwanden", which led over the moss (= moor ), was mentioned for the first time.

In 1336 the civil law contract stipulated that Schwanden should serve as the conference venue in the event of disputes between Büren and Bern. In addition, the village served as a resting place for traders from Büren an der Aare , who spent the night in Schwanden on the evening before the market in Bern . Therefore there were also numerous inns and a thermal bath .

In 1834 Hauptstrasse 6 was built right through the moss. The new route was shorter and the traders took the new route to Bern . So Schwanden lost its importance as a rest stop. In 1855 Jakob Stämpfli von Schwanden was elected to the Federal Council.

In 1864, when the construction of a railway line from Bern to Biel began, the communities of Schwanden and Schüpfen pushed the station towards each other because they were afraid of the "Funkenden Ungeheuer" ( steam locomotive ) . Ultimately, the station was assigned to the parish , i.e. Schüpfen .

In 1963 Schwanden was incorporated into the community of Schüpfen . In 2003 the school in Schwanden was closed.
