The Kerzers – Lyss railway line is a railway line in Switzerland. The line is owned by the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), but operations are the responsibility of the BLS . Together with the Lyss – Solothurn railway line, it forms timetable field 291.

history

The line was born on June 12, 1876, when the Chemins de fer de la Suisse Occidentale opened a railway line from Murten via Kerzers to Fräschels . On the same day, the Jura bernois put its section between Fräschels and Lyss into operation, so that the railway line as a whole was operated by two companies, but on a single day. The section between Murten and Kerzers of the OS is part of today's Broye longitudinale . In 1902 the JB successor company JS was incorporated into the SBB, which still calls the infrastructure its property today.

Until the introduction of the regular timetable, the route held the timetable number 16 together with the Broye longitudinale , so that the timetable field between Palézieux and Lyss was valid. Together with the Lyss – Solothurn and Büren an der Aare railway lines , it has been part of timetable field 291 since 1982. With the 2004 timetable change, SBB handed over the operations of numerous regional train lines in the Bern area to BLS in order to simultaneously incorporate their long-distance services. Since that day, only BLS trains have been running on the route between Kerzers and Lyss. On 1 June 2005 next to the was Papiliorama Kerzers the stop Kerzers Papiliorama opened jointly by SBB as the owner of the infrastructure and the BLS, in charge of the traffic at the bus stop. At the same time, Kerzers train station was modernized, and the automated signal box is now controlled from Bern Bümpliz-Nord.

traffic

Kerzers rail cross: left to Bern , right to Murten

The BLS runs regional trains every hour in both directions between Lyss and Kerzers, which at certain times are connected to Bern (as S52). In Kerzers there are connections to the regional train connections to Bern and Murten (- Lausanne), while in Lyss the connection to the RegioExpress connection between Biel and Bern is ensured.

In autumn, the Aarberg sugar factory generates a very high volume of goods traffic on this route, as a large part of the sugar beet is still delivered by rail.

The Kerzers train station contains the only standard-gauge rail cross of main tracks in Switzerland. The Broye Longitudinale and the Kerzers – Lyss line cross with the Bern-Neuchâtel railway . There are also cross connections between the two lines, but only those that touch Kerzers train station.
