The Papiliorama ( Latin : papilio = butterfly , moth) is a special zoo in Kerzers in the canton of Friborg that focuses in particular on keeping butterflies and butterflies. It also shows a variety of animals from the South American rainforest and the Amazon region . A separate stop has been set up for the Papiliorama on the Kerzers – Lyss railway line .

history

The Papiliorama was opened in Marin NE in 1988 . It was destroyed by a major fire on January 1st, 1995, but thanks to many donations it could be rebuilt in the same year. Since space was limited, it was relocated to the opposite edge of the Seeland to Kerzers in 2003 . Until 2010 it had the suffix Papiliorama - Swiss Tropical Gardens .

Papiliorama

The Papiliorama is the largest butterfly garden in Switzerland. In a glass dome with a diameter of 40 meters and a maximum height of 14 meters, over 60 different species of tropical butterflies and moths are at home in an artificial jungle-like environment. The following animal species can also be seen in the Papiliorama:

Nocturama

In the adjacent Nocturama (Latin: nocturna = nocturnal) nocturnal animals of the South and Central American tropical forests are shown. The artificial lighting shifts the day and night cycle by twelve hours to enable observation of the animals while they are awake. The following animal species can be seen:

Swiss Butterfly Garden

In 2004, an aviary for native butterfly species opened in the Papiliorama . On a total area of ​​around 500 m², the aviary contains several vital habitats for native butterflies, such as rough meadows and dry grass. During the summer, over ten native butterfly species fly in the Swiss Butterfly Garden and also breed in the aviary.

Jungle Trek

The Jungle Trek opened in March 2007. This exhibition shows the biodiversity of the tropical forests with their animals and plants.

Other attractions

In the petting zoo, mainly domestic and farm animals are shown that children can feed and stroke. There is also the so-called Pongo plaza , a children's playground.
