The pulsatrix is a genus of owls within the family of authentics owls. The owls of this genus occur exclusively in tropical and subtropical America from Mexico to Argentina.

features

Owls are relatively large owls. They reach body lengths of 41 to 52 centimeters. A lack of feather ears is characteristic of owls . The head looks rounded. All four species have whitish to ocher-colored areas on the face, which give the eye area something similar to glasses and have led to the name common in German. The eyes are large and vary from orange-yellow to black-brown. The claws are strongly developed. The throat and the fore neck are separated from the rest of the body's plumage by a band that contrasts with the color.

species

Traditionally, three species are included in the genus of the owls. In their monograph on owls, published in 2008, Claus König and Friedhelm Weick distinguish a fourth species, the short-browed owl , which is treated as a subspecies of the owl in older literature. In the opinion of the two ornithologists, it is justified to treat this species as an independent one, since the sound repertoire differs from that of the owl and there are also numerous differences in the plumage. Overall, the following types are therefore described:
