Appearance

The brown owl reaches a body length of 48 centimeters and is a large representative within the genus of the owls. Feather ears are missing, as is typical for owls. The top of the body is dark brown with a few pale spots. The underside of the body is whitish with noticeable rust-brown to dark brown horizontal stripes. The chest band is wide and brown. The face veil is brown with white eyebrows. The throat is whitish. The eyes are dark red-brown to black-brown. The legs are feathered, but the toes are bare.

The short-browed owl has no horizontal stripes on the belly and is lighter colored on the upper side of the body.

The exact range of the black owl may not yet be fully known. It occurs in Colombia, in the east of Ecuador, in Peru east of the Andes and in Bolivia. This species is probably a resident bird. It inhabits damp and dense mountain forests. Its height distribution ranges from 700 to 1,600 meters above sea level.

Way of life

The way of life of the brown owl has so far not been adequately researched. It is probably nocturnal and its food spectrum is probably similar to that of the owl and the yellow-browed owl.
