The short-browed Spectacled ( Pulsatrix pulsatrix ) is an owl art from the family of authentics owl (Strigidae). It occurs exclusively in South America. This separation of the subspecies Pulsatrix perspicillata pulsatrix as a separate species made by König and Weick has not yet been generally accepted.

Appearance

The short-browed owl reaches a body length of 51 to 52 centimeters and is thus the largest representative within the genus of owls. The upper parting and the nape of the neck are brown and do not contrast with the rest of the upper plumage. The eyebrows are pale cream and relatively short. The lower part of the face veil is separated from the rest of the lower plumage by a relatively thin cream-colored band. The chest band is brown. The eyes are brown to pale orange-brown.

The short-browed owl differs from the owl in its brown skull. The yellow- eyed owl is significantly smaller and the brown owl has noticeably longer eyebrows. However, all four types differ primarily in their sound repertoire.

Distribution area and habitat

The short-browed owl occurs from eastern Brazil to possibly the northeast of Argentina. In the north, its range overlaps with that of the owl. The yellow-eyed owl and the short-eyed owl are sympatric species in individual regions . The short-browed owl is a resident bird that uses semi-open forests and forests with clearings. It is also found near human settlements.

Way of life

The short-browed owl is a nocturnal species of owl. Its food spectrum consists of smaller mammals, small birds and other vertebrates. Presumably it nests in tree hollows. Otherwise almost nothing is known about its reproductive biology.
