Hans Blunck

Hans Blunck (born September 13, 1885 in Wankendorf ( Holstein ), † January 12, 1958 in Heilbronn ) was a German phytomedicist .

Live and act

Blunck studied science and was 1912 at the University of Marburg Dr. phil. PhD in zoology . In 1914 he joined the Biological Reich Institute for Agriculture and Forestry . Otto Appel , the president of this institution, made him head of the newly established branch for cereal and forage plant diseases in Kitzeberg in 1925 . In the same year Blunck completed his habilitation at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel in the field of plant diseases. In 1927 he was appointed associate professor. In the years that followed, his investigations into foot diseases in cereals received a great deal of attention from experts.

Blunck had been a member of the Stahlhelm since 1923 . During the time of National Socialism he became a member of the NSDAP and the Marine SA .

In 1935, Blunck followed a call to the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn to the then only full chair for plant diseases in Germany. In 1939, in addition to teaching, he was a clerk for plant pathology in the specialist journal Der Biologe , which had been taken over by the SS-Ahnenerbe . In the post-war period he was head of the Bonn Institute for Plant Diseases for a short time, but retired in 1948 for health reasons.

Blunck worked almost exclusively in the field of applied entomology , but he always viewed plant protection as a unified whole. In several articles, he presented in detail the status of plant protection measures in the 1930s as well as the historical discipline of the field of plant protection. Since 1937 he was editor of the "Journal for Plant Diseases (Plant Pathology) and Plant Protection". In 1954 he was awarded the " Otto Appel Memorial Coin ". In 1955 the Hohenheim Agricultural University awarded him an honorary doctorate.
