Merowe
Coordinates: 18 ° 29 ′ N , 31 ° 29 ′ E
Merowe is a city in the Sudanese state of Ash-Shamaliyya . The place is 330 km north of Khartoum at the end point of Wadi Abu Dom , on the left, eastern bank of the Nile a few kilometers south and opposite the city of Karima . On the Karima side are the ruins of Gebel Barkal and the remains of the ancient Sanam excavation site have been preserved in the village itself .
Merowe has an airport and is characterized by the construction of the Merowe Dam 40 km further north . Merowe is not to be confused with the historical place Meroe .
