A personal identification number (abbreviated to PK ) is an alphanumeric code that enables the unambiguous identification of a member of the German armed forces, civilian service or member of the military administration.

All German soldiers , those doing community service and members of the Bundeswehr administration in the Bundeswehr and the Federal Office for Family and Civil Society Tasks are provided with a personal identification number . This is made up of the date of birth, the first letter of the surname and a five-digit number, of which the first three digits indicate the reporting district (formerly the district military replacement office for soldiers ). The personal identification number is given in correspondence on all documents relating to a person in order to enable the person to be quickly identified. Date of birth

The date of birth is recorded in the first six digits. The person in the example was born on October 26, 1983.

Surname (initial)

The letter is the first letter of the surname. In the example it starts with the letter "K". This letter remains valid even after a name change.

District military replacement office or reporting district

The first three digits after the initial of the name stand for the district military replacement office or the reporting district in which the person was recorded when the PK was drawn up. In the example, the person from the District Army Replacement Office (KWEA) Lüneburg (209) was sampled. With the suspension of compulsory military service, this task was taken over by the career centers of the Bundeswehr .

The first digit of the second column shows in which region of Germany the person was sampled or first recorded by the Bundeswehr. For male persons, the PK is created when the military is recorded (around 17 years of age).

The digits mean:

Subsequent digit

This number is a sequential number in order to be able to differentiate between people with the same birthday and last name in a small wind turbine or reporting district. Check digit

Name change

If the name of the person changes, for example through marriage or an official name change, the letter of the personal identification number remains unchanged. A move to the area of ​​responsibility of another small wind turbine also does not lead to the award of a new PK.

Like all members of the military, German soldiers wear an identification tag on duty . This is an oval metal mark with several fields perforated in the middle.
