history

The neo-Gothic Herz-Jesu-Kirche was built between 1895 and 1900 according to plans by the Münster architect Wilhelm Rincklake . It was consecrated on June 22, 1900, the patronage festival, and is the first church in the diocese of Münster to be consecrated to the heart of Jesus .

The church is oriented in a north-south direction. It consists of a three-aisled nave with a transept , the arms of which, however, hardly extend beyond the aisles of the nave. The mighty, four-story bell tower, visible from afar, adjoins the nave in the south. It is 96.63 meters high, making it the highest church tower in Münster. The church itself is 61 meters long and 22 meters wide; the main nave is 24 meters high, the side aisles are 11 meters high.

During the Second World War , the vault, the main altar and all windows were destroyed by bombs. Only the sacristy with its hand-carved parament cupboards survived the war unscathed . In 1951 the church was restored and the stained glass windows were later renewed. In 1970/1971 the church was redesigned as a result of the Second Vatican Council : an altar island was created in the crossing. The high altar has been removed. The choir behind the altar island is now used as a weekday church.

The Parish of the Sacred Heart and St. Elizabeth was on 30 May 2013, the parishes of St. Benedict and St.. Edith Stein , in the parish of St. Mauritz incorporated. Since then the Herz-Jesu-Kirche has been a branch church.

Furnishing

The furnishings were supplemented by new pieces after the war losses. The triumphal cross , the tabernacle and the evangelist figures are worth mentioning .

Organs

The church houses a main organ (1954) on a gallery in the south wing, and a choir organ (1993), which is housed in the east transept.

The first organ was built in 1924 by Friedrich Fleiter (Münster) with a neo-Gothic prospect and 56 stops , but it was badly damaged in the Second World War. In 1954 Fritz Klingenhegel (Münster) built a new instrument with a free pipe prospect. In 1993 the company Fleiter from Münster delivered a new console for the main organ and added to the disposition .

The choir organ was built in 1993 by Fleiter from Münster and set up so that the main organ can be played from here.

Bells

In the tower there is a six-part V12 bell that the municipality acquired in 1948. The bell was used at the Bochum Catholic Day. The previous bell had fallen victim to arms production in the two world wars.
