Rot Weiss Ahlen is a football and sports club from Ahlen . The first men's team will play in the Regionalliga West from the 2020/21 season . After the first relegation in the 2005/06 season - at that time still as LR Ahlen - from the 2nd Bundesliga and the withdrawal of the main sponsor, the name was changed to Rot Weiss Ahlen on June 1, 2006.
history
The beginnings
In 1911 coal was mined for the first time at the Ahlener Zeche Westfalen - for own consumption; the first coal intended for dispatch left the colliery station in 1913. Soon afterwards, the first sports clubs were founded in the eastern part of the city, whose members came from the colliery workforce. In their free time, especially on weekends, football games were a magnet and a distraction from the miners' hard everyday work.
In the course of the Second World War , the leading Ahlen football clubs formed a war game community (KSG), which in 1944 was promoted from the district class to the Gauliga Westfalen . The KSG Ahlen completed in the prematurely canceled 1944/45 season, however, only one Gauliga game.
Immediately after the end of the war, the first efforts were made to re-establish regular sports operations.
It was Ernst Bornemann, a well-known and successful active athlete - gymnast, handball player and, until the merger with the company sports association of the Zeche Westfalen, technical director and women's gymnastics manager of TuS Germania 13 Ahlen - who took the initiative. As a sports officer in the sports committee of the anti-Nazi committee, he invited the authorized representatives of former sports clubs (they were not allowed to be members of the NSDAP, the SA or the SS) to discuss the restructuring with them on July 18, 1945 and to advise on the revival of sport in Ahlen. The association was supposed to bundle the former civil, Christian and socialist sports organizations centrally and contribute to increasing the efficiency of games and sports and to protecting the anti-nationalist interests of sports. In return, the affiliated associations' right to exist should expire with immediate effect. This declaration was signed by representatives of six former clubs, including DJK Ahlen and Blau-Weiß Ahlen.
It was not easy to found an association at the time, and approval from the British military government was required to found a new association. The approval was given by letter of August 9, 1945 by Major Moon and so the inaugural meeting was held on August 12, 1945 in the Hansahof. This date is considered to be the founding date of the Turn- und Sportverein (TuS) Ahlen 45 e. V.
Unfortunately, the founding minutes are no longer available in the documents at hand.
TuS Ahlen: Eight sports clubs from Ahlen merged
The former eight sports clubs in Ahlen have become a central club called "Turn- und Sportverein Ahlen e.V." united. Ernst Bornemann was unanimously elected chairman of the association.
The big event of this time was the game of the Schalke "Knappen" at TuS Ahlen. Schalke 04 won on October 14, 1945 on the Westfalenkampfbahn with the best line-up 7-2. In the following years TuS Ahlen played in the highest amateur classes in Westphalia.
The TuS'ler's own sports field, the Glückaufkampfbahn, today's Wersestadion, was inaugurated on August 21, 1949.
The 1992 crisis
After many ups and downs in the club's history, the end of the traditional club TuS Ahlen seemed to have come in 1992 with the threat of relegation to the district league . Helmut Spikker, a native of Ahlen and owner of a local cosmetics company, took over the almost bankrupt association. With Joachim Krug , an experienced coach was hired to save the club from decline. With an unprecedented series of successes, the club managed to rise four times in a row under the new leadership. TuS Ahlen ended the 1995/96 season as champions of the Oberliga Westfalen and rose to the Regionalliga West / Südwest .
LR Ahlen (1996-2006)
With the promotion to the regional league, the two traditional Ahlen clubs TuS and Blau-Weiß Ahlen were united. On June 1, 1996, LR Ahlen (Athletics Rasensport Ahlen eV) was created from this merger . The abbreviation "LR" was also based on a company owned by the patron Spikker, LR International , which became the main sponsor of the association. In addition, the soccer club's logo was based on the LR International logo . At the same time, the old Glückaufkampfbahn was rebuilt and modernized on this occasion; since 1997 it has been called the Wersestadion .
In the following four years LR Ahlen played quite successfully in the regional league. In the 1999/2000 season , the team of coach Jupp Tenhagen took second place. In the relegation she secured promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga with a 1-1 draw at SC Pfullendorf and a 2-1 win against 1. FC Union Berlin .
The start of the 2000/01 season got off to a false start for LR Ahlen, as a result of which coach Tenhagen was dismissed. Under the leadership of his successor Peter Neururer , the team started a strong race to catch up and ended the season in 6th place.
Subsequently, the Ahlen team fought increasingly against relegation. After another good 2001/02 season, during which Neururer was replaced by Uwe Rapolder , the decline of LR Ahlen began. In the following three years, the team only managed to keep the league on the last day of the game. The coaching statistics of the LR Ahlen are also unprecedented in these years. From 2002 to 2006 the coaching chair was filled seven times: Uwe Fuchs , Werner Lorant , Stefan Kuntz , Ingo Peter , František Straka , Paul Linz and Bernard Dietz were the names of the coaches in chronological order. Straka's successor Paul Linz could then not meet the required goal of relegation. On the 32nd game day of the 2005/06 season, LR Ahlen was finally relegated from the 2nd Bundesliga after a 2-1 defeat against SpVgg Greuther Fürth ; since the 2nd match day the team had occupied a relegation zone.
One of the sporting highlights in the six years of the 2nd Bundesliga was May 22nd, 2005, when LR Ahlen had to compete on a relegation zone on the last matchday at TSV 1860 Munich, which still had opportunities for promotion. The team won 4: 3 in the Grünwalder Stadium and thus secured themselves relegation.
Rot Weiss Ahlen (since 2006)
Regional league
As a consequence of the sporting debacle of the 2005/06 season, President Helmut Spikker announced his resignation on May 9, 2006. Contrary to his previous announcement, he did not run for election to the Supervisory Board. LR International (now LR Health & Beauty Systems ), which Helmut Spikker had already sold to the financial investor Apax at the end of 2004 , also withdrew as main sponsor, which is why the association was no longer allowed to bear the name LR. On May 12th, coach Paul Linz left the club because he saw no prospect of a direct re-promotion.
The first step towards a new beginning was taken on May 15th with the engagement of Bernard Dietz as coach. The former coach of the amateurs of MSV Duisburg initially received a two-year contract. At an extraordinary general meeting on May 31, the statutes were changed and the association was renamed Rot Weiss Ahlen on July 1 . In the elections for the new supervisory board on June 29th, Heinz-Jürgen Gosda was elected chairman of the board and thus president of the association.
After a bad start to the new regional league season, in which the team only scored 14 points in 13 games, Dietz announced his retirement on October 29, 2006 after a 3-0 defeat by Kickers Emden . His successor was the previous assistant coach Heiko Bonan the next day .
On November 27, 2006, the club's management announced debts resulting from contaminated sites in the amount of 833,000 euros. In order to reduce the costs of ongoing operations, savings measures were decided. The regional league team remained unaffected for the time being and the cancellation of the league team (RW Ahlen II) and two youth teams ( B2 and C2) from the game was withdrawn after some sponsors had promised financial support. The district administrator rejected a request for a guarantee from the city of Ahlen. After all, an additional payment by the German Football League of 241,000 euros in December from the Bundesliga seasons 2001 to 2004 as well as the pro-rata profit from the 2006 World Cup in the amount of 629,000 euros in June and the sale of so-called friendship modules helped to overcome the financial crisis.
The 2006/07 regional league season ended in 13th place. Bonan left the club at the end of the season and moved to Rot-Weiss Essen . His successor was regulated internally. Bonan's former assistant coach Christian Wück was promoted to head coach, he took up the post on July 1.
After a mixed start to the 2007/08 season, the team improved in the course of the second half of the season and remained unbeaten from the 21st to the 36th match day. From the 30th day of the match she was in first place. On the 35th day of the game, RW Ahlen was the first team in the Regionalliga Nord to qualify for the new single-track third division . There you managed with coach Wück in his first season as head coach with a 1-0 away win on matchday 36 at VfL Wolfsburg II and a 3-1 away win on the last matchday at SV Babelsberg 03 as champions of the league even the promotion to the league 2nd Bundesliga. The team had not received a single expulsion.
Back in the 2nd division
In the 2008/09 season, RW Ahlen slipped into midfield after a good start. On March 3, 2009 Christian Wück was given leave of absence and replaced by his former assistant coach Bernd Heemsoth . In addition to the sporting problems, Wück's dismissal was also due to the absence of team training due to his advanced training at the German Sport University in Cologne .
On April 9, 2009, Stefan Emmerling was introduced as the new head coach for the 2009/10 season. He then started his activity early on April 16, 2009 to ensure relegation. The team succeeded in this on the 33rd matchday with a 2-2 draw at VfL Osnabrück.
After only one point from the first six games of the 2009/10 season, Emmerling, assistant coach Heemsoth and sporting director Stefan Grädler were dismissed. On September 20, 2009, the previous youth coach Andreas Zimmermann was introduced as the new head coach. After four games under his responsibility, he was replaced on October 14, 2009 by Christian Hock (he did not have the necessary coaching license) . Zimmermann took over the duties of assistant trainer.
After a 0-1 home defeat against Alemannia Aachen on matchday 31 of the 2009/10 season , Ahlen was prematurely the first relegated from the second division.
Relegation and bankruptcy
On May 5, 2010 Arie van Lent was introduced as the new coach for the 2010/11 season. Former midfielder Daniel Thioune , who ended his playing career in 2010 due to various injuries, was at his side as assistant coach . On July 26, 2010, President Heinz-Jürgen Gosda resigned for health reasons.
On October 14, 2010, the association's management filed an application to open insolvency proceedings at the Münster District Court due to the threat of insolvency. Attorney Michael Mönig from Münster was appointed as insolvency administrator . With the help of the new major sponsor Peter Evers (former President of SC Paderborn 07 ), this secured the club's solvency until the end of the season. Despite the deduction of three points decreed in April 2011 due to violations in connection with the economic approval process for the 3rd division, the team managed to stay up. At the end of the season it became known that coach Lent is leaving the club and moving to Kickers Offenbach .
On May 24, 2011, the district court officially opened the bankruptcy proceedings, which automatically resulted in forced relegation, as the team was placed in last place in the 3rd division. Due to the economic problems, the entire management board including the supervisory board resigned on May 26, 2011. On the same evening, Dirk Neuhaus was elected a new president. On June 3, 2011 it became known that the club had let the deadline for a possible regional league participation pass and was aiming for a start in the NRW league . On July 13, 2011, all creditors agreed to plan bankruptcy and thus to the reorganization of the association. Two days later, Rot Weiss Ahlen received the license for the fifth-rate NRW league in the 2011/12 season .
Oberliga
With Thomas Berndsen, soccer director of the Soccer and Athletics Association Westphalia (FLVW) , a new coach was signed on June 7th; Björn Lerbs became assistant coach. Both signed a contract for one year plus an option and continued to work for the FLVW. On July 30, 2011, RW Ahlen started the season with the DFB Cup game against SC Paderborn 07 . It was the highest defeat in the club's history, the game ended 10-0 for Paderborn. After 13 defeats in a row, Berndsen was given a leave of absence on November 15, 2011. His successor on November 21 was the former successful trainer and sports director Joachim Krug. Under his leadership, after two goalless draws on December 11, 2011, they achieved their first victory in the NRW League.
The Wersestadion was returned to the city of Ahlen on October 20, 2011 in the sense of a reversion as compensation (the basis was compensation of an estimated € 400,000 in the insolvency plan). This means that Rot Weiss Ahlen is only a guest in the former stadium.
In the NRW league, the Ahlens finished 17th and penultimate place in the table in 2011/12. Due to the dissolution of this division at the end of the season, however, the Westphalia remained fifth class. They appeared at the beginning of the 2012/13 season in the re-introduced Oberliga Westfalen , which they finished in 9th place.
In the 2014/15 season, Rot Weiss Ahlen was second in the table and made it to the Regionalliga West . Two years later, the Ahlen family got down again.
