Pascal Borel (born September 26, 1978 in Karlsruhe ) is a former German football player .
Career
Borel grew up in Stutensee-Friedrichstal , where he began his football career at FC Germania Friedrichstal . He played his first appearances as a professional footballer for SV Waldhof Mannheim in the third-class Regionalliga Süd . The goalkeeper Borel was in the service of Werder Bremen from the 1998/99 season to the 2004/05 season .
In Bremen Borel was initially the third goalkeeper. As such, he was initially used exclusively for the regional league team. In his first season he was also part of the Bundesliga squad , but was only a substitute goalkeeper on the bench. After Frank Rost left , Borel prevailed in the duel with Jakub Wierzchowski and went into the Bundesliga season 2002/03 as a regular goalkeeper . However, Borel could not build on the achievements of his predecessor Rost, which led to criticism from fans and the media. The Bild newspaper described Borel as the worst goalkeeper in the league. In the meantime, coach Thomas Schaaf preferred Wierzchowski for some games. Then Borel's performance stabilized. For the 2003/04 season , a new goalkeeper was signed with Andreas Reinke and Borel had to be content with the reserve role again. In the following two years he only played a single Bundesliga substitute as a substitute.
For the 2005/06 season Borel moved to the second division club LR Ahlen . In the 2007/08 season he was under contract with Honvéd Budapest , after the end of the season his contract was not renewed. In March 2009, Fredi Bobic steered him as the new managing director in the first Bulgarian league for FC Chernomorets Burgas , because their goalkeeper was out longer with an injury. He stayed on the Black Sea coast until the summer break of 2011 when he moved to the German regional league team RB Leipzig .
Before the start of the 2012/13 season, the new sports director of RB Leipzig, Ralf Rangnick , released Borel because the club no longer planned with him. After that, Borel ended his career.
Winning the German championship in 2004 and winning the DFB Cup with Werder Bremen in 1999 and 2004 are among the Baden native's greatest successes .
