Bernd Meier (born February 11, 1972 in Rain am Lech ; † August 2, 2012 in Donauwörth ) was a German football goalkeeper and goalkeeper coach .
Career
Meier had played as an amateur for the clubs TSV Burgheim , TSV 1896 Rain and TSV Aindling before he signed his first professional contract with TSV 1860 Munich in 1993 . In 1860 Munich Meier achieved his greatest successes as a regular goalkeeper with promotion, relegation and establishment in the Bundesliga. In 1996 he took part in training for the senior national team for a short time .
When the goalkeeper tried to knock off an intercepted ball from the ground during the game against FC Bayern Munich on April 11, 1998, the opposing striker Carsten Jancker behind him spiked the ball off his foot and pushed it into the empty goal. The TSV 1860 Munich , who had been 0: 1 back then, finally lost the local derby with 1: 3. After that, Meier played no more games for TSV 1860 Munich.
In 1999 he moved to Borussia Mönchengladbach , and in 2002 to LR Ahlen . During one of the last training sessions before moving to Borussia Dortmund , he tore a cruciate ligament , which meant that he was out for the first half of the 2005/06 season. After his recovery he was in the 2006/07 season in the amateur team of Borussia until he tore a cruciate ligament again in the away game at his former club LR Ahlen. The injury meant the end of his career. Meier played a total of 94 Bundesliga games .
Most recently, Meier was goalkeeping coach at Wacker Burghausen and looked after the goalkeepers of the German U-17 national team . He has also been a trainer at TSV Burgheim since September 2011 .
He died of a heart attack on August 2, 2012 after being hospitalized for food poisoning.
