history

The club was founded in June 1891 in the Bothe restaurant in Dortmund-Somborn as a gymnastics club. In 1906 the club joined the German Gymnastics Association . From 1934 the club was run as the "Werkssportverein Westfalia Somborn 1891". A name change in 1937 then established the club name "Sportverein Westfalia Somborn 1891 eV".

In 1926 a handball department was founded, the 1st team rose to the first district class in 1929. The success of the club handball players continued until 1936, in the decider against VfL Hagen, they were promoted to the handball Gauliga Westfalen , the highest German handball class at the time. The highlight of the first season, which ended in 6th place, was the 9: 7 away win of the promoted team against the reigning German champions MSV Hindenburg Minden . After 8th place in the following season, Westfalia was relegated to the district class again in 1939.

In 1947 a club house was built, the sports field was renewed and the gym on Somborner Straße was repaired. In May 1948 a football team and a table tennis department started operations. In 1950 the handball players became city champions, the soccer players rose to the first district class.

The handball players reached the top division again in 1951 when they made it to the top division. In the following years things went downhill in terms of sport, the football and table tennis departments were dissolved. It was not until 1972, when the table tennis department was re-established, that three departments - with gymnastics and handball - were again operated in Somborn.
