The Conservation Areas in New Zealand are designated nature reserves that are protected under the Conservation Act 1987 and are maintained and monitored by the New Zealand Department of Conservation (DOC).

Term classification

The designation Conservation Areas must not be confused with the designation Conservation Park , even if Conservation Parks and other nature reserves are subsumed under the heading Conservation areas ” on the Department of Conservation's Categories of Conservation Land website . In contrast to the parks (50,000 to 150,000 hectares), the Conservation Areas , which are listed here in the article, are smaller areas, which usually comprise a few hundred hectares of land, with exceptions, as the St James Conservation Area shows.
