The Forest Parks in New Zealand are designated forests for conservation that are protected by the Conservation Act 1987 and are maintained and monitored by the New Zealand Department of Conservation (DOC).

definition

In 2000, New Zealand had a total of 20  forest parks that were previously managed by the New Zealand Forest Service . They covered an area of around 1.8 million hectares of land. Since some of the forest parks have been rededicated in conservation parks in the past few years , the number of parks has now shrunk to fifteen.

The forest parks were designated in order to be able to put forested mountain ranges in the country under nature protection. Public use is less restricted in them than in national parks or reserves. Hiking, camping, fishing and hunting of wild animals are permitted under certain conditions. Riding with mountain bikes is also allowed in some parks on designated routes.
