The Coromandel Forest Park is a standing reserve forests in the region Waikato on the North Island of New Zealand . The park is subordinate to the Department of Conservation .

geography

The Coromandel Forest Park extends with eight individual areas and a total area of approx. 72,000  hectares over parts of the Coromandel Peninsula to the south down to the Karangahake Gorge , which runs between Paeroa in the west and Waihi in the east. The park's largest contiguous wooded area is north of New Zealand State Highway 25A and south of New Zealand State Highway 309 . In the west it extends in parts to the coast to the Firth of Thames and in the east at one point to the small town of Tairua , which lies on the Bay of Plenty .

history

After gold was found on the Coromandel Peninsula in the 1840s , the forest in the affected areas suffered from gold mining. Logging and harvesting resin from the Kauri trees also put a strain on the forests. Gold mining in the forests continued into the 1930s and logging of the kauri trees into the 1940s. In 1970 the peninsula's forests were placed under protection under the administration of the New Zealand Forest Service and designated as a Forest Park . The grand opening of the park took place on March 7, 1970. In the years that followed, the New Zealand Forest Service planted around 40,000  kauri trees to preserve the forest. But many trees did not survive and the protection of the forest was criticized by the locals as insufficient.

With the passage of the Conservation Act 1987 , the Department of Conservation took over responsibility for nature conservation in the park in 1987 .
