The North-west Nelson Forest Park was established in 1970 as a protected forest in the Tasman and West Coast regions , in the north-west of the South Island of New Zealand . Eight state forests were merged under the park . Together they covered an area of 31,665 hectares of forest. In 1987, the Department of Conservation , established with the Conservation Act 1987 , took over management of the park.
Kahurangi National Park
In 1996, the North-west Nelson Forest Park was merged into the newly established Kahurangi National Park .
In some maps, a small part of the North-west Nelson Forest Park northwest of the Wakamara Range is shown as a park, but this has not been confirmed by the Department of Conservation .
