The Whareorino Conservation Area is a protected area in the Waikato region of the North Island of New Zealand . The area is under the Department of Conservation .
geography
The Whareorino Conservation Area consists of a contiguous area on the west coast of the North Island, north of New Zealand State Highway 3 , in the Herangi Range , which is up to 806 m high and extends almost 10 km from the coast in a north-south direction. The protected area extends in the same direction over a length of 26.5 km and at its widest point measures 14.5 km in an east-west direction. The main rivers that flow through the reserve are the Waikawau River and Manganui River in the western part and the Awakino River in the southwest of the Herangi Range .
Access to the area is via hiking trails from the west via Waikawau and a little further north from the road between Waikawau and Moeatoa , from the north via a little west of Pomarangai , from the east via Haku and from the south via Mahoenui and a more than 10 km long access road possible along the Awakino River .
