Ernst Sontow (born January 18, 1918 , † September 5, 2001 ) was a German football player and coach.

Career

At the age of 18, Sontow already belonged to the first team of FC Schalke 04 , for which he was in the Gauliga Westfalen from 1936 to 1943 , in one of 16, later increased to 23 Gauligen at the time of National Socialism as the uniform top division in the German Reich, Denied point games. In this dominated - the seasons 1933/34 to 1935/36 and also 1943/44 - exclusively his club and so it is not surprising that he won the Gau championship seven times during his club membership. Although his club took part in the final round of the German championship just as often, he was only used in the seasons 1937/38 , 1938/39 and 1942/43 . At its premiere, he played all six games in Group B , with the second, on April 15, 1938 in the 6-0 victory over SV Dessau 05 , his only goal scored. He was involved in both the narrow 1-0 semi-final win on May 29, 1938 over Fortuna Düsseldorf in Cologne, as well as the 3: 3 draw afterwards in the first final on June 26, 1938 in Berlin against Hannover 96 . The replay that became necessary a week later at the same location also went into overtime due to the late goal from Hanoverian Johannes Jakobs for a 3-3 draw in the 88th minute. Erich Meng finally scored the 4: 3 winning goal for Hannover 96 in the 117th minute. A year later, on June 18, 1939, FC Schalke 04 won their fourth with a 9-0 victory over the completely overwhelmed SK Admira Wien Championship; Sontow did not belong to the final team, but was still allowed to call himself German champion, as he contributed to it in the third game of Group 4 , in the 3-1 victory over CSC 03 Kassel . He played his last final game on May 2, 1943 in an 8-1 first round win at Spielverein 06 Kassel . He also played six games for the Tschammerpokal from 1936 to 1938 , reached the final twice and only won that of 1937, which was only played on January 9, 1938 in Cologne and won 2-1 against Fortuna Düsseldorf.

In April 1943 Sontow made his debut as a guest player at Hamburger SV , for which he was used in 13 championship games in 1943/44 in the Hamburg district and scored as many goals. However, he then returned to FC Schalke 04, for which he was active in Group 1 of the war district in 1944/45 , whose game operations had to be stopped at the end of September 1944 due to the unusually harsh onset of winter and the lack of players capable of using the field.

After the end of the Second World War he was used in the Oberliga West, which was founded in 1947 . The 1947/48 season , in which he played 17 games and made his debut on September 14, 1947 (1st matchday) in the 2-2 draw in the away game against Hamborn 07 , was finished in sixth place; West German champion was Borussia Dortmund .

He ended his football career at Union Gelsenkirchen and then as a player-coach at Spvgg Andernach , for which he was active in the Oberliga Südwest in 1950/51 .

As a coach, Sontow supervised Eintracht Osnabrück in the 1952/53 season and VfL Wolfsburg in the second year after promotion in 1955/56 , each in the northern soccer league . In the meantime he had worked at Singen 04 .
