The Stade de Nice ( officially Allianz Riviera since August 2012 due to a name sponsorship ) is a rugby and football stadium in the French city of Nice , which opened in September 2013. The stadium is mainly used by the OGC Nice football club . But rugby games are also played. To do this, the stands behind the goal can be retracted. It offers space for around 35,000 spectators. The venue was also a venue for the 2016 European Football Championship . For UEFA or FIFA tournaments, it bears the advertising-free name Stade de Nice .
history
On October 11, 2010, Nice's Mayor Christian Estrosi presented the plans for the stadium. The arena designed by the architects Wilmotte & Associés with 35,000 seats - for non-football events up to 45,000 - was originally supposed to cost 166 million euros. The work, which began in July 2011, should be completed by the end of June 2013, but was postponed until mid-September. The total costs actually amount to 243.5 million euros. The public corporations pay 69 million of this; the rest is borne by a private investor group (Nice Éco Stadium) , whose shareholders are Vinci Concessions (50%), the Caisse des Dépôts and South Europe Infrastructure Equity Finance . NES has the marketing rights until 2041. In early 2015, the public prosecutor opened an investigation into "any financial irregularities in connection with the public-private partnership " in the construction of the arena.
OGC Nice has to pay between one and two million euros per season, depending on the audience income, to use the stadium, while the footballers could use the Stade du Ray almost free of charge. The basis for determining the new user fees is an assumed average number of spectators of 24,000 per home game - although the Aiglons had an average of 8,466 paying visitors in their most successful season for a long time ( they finished fourth in the 2012/13 season ) .
In July 2012 it became known that the insurance group Allianz had secured the right to the name of the new arena. Since then, the stadium has been called Allianz Riviera . The contract has a term of nine years and brings in 1.8 million euros annually.
The new home of OGC Nice was inaugurated on September 22, 2013, in the first game the home side defeated Valenciennes FC with 4-0 goals.
The sports facility was one of nine venues for the 2019 Women's World Cup .
Games for the 2016 European Football Championship
On the occasion of the European Football Championship in France in 2016, a total of four games took place in the Allianz Riviera. To avoid conflicts of interest with UEFA sponsors, the stadium was named Stade de Nice during the tournament .
