history

The stadium was opened in May 1934 under the name Parc des Sports in the presence of the then President Albert Lebrun . It got its current name in 1969 from the first French Minister of Tourism, Gaston Gérard . He also invented the well-known poultry dish Poulet Gaston Gérard . In 1974 a floodlight system was installed . In 1990 the press stand, floodlights and boxes were built. The stadium was designed for various sports such as soccer, rugby, athletics and cycling. On June 13, 1992, Serhij Bubka set a new pole vault world record with 6.11 meters .

On September 26, 2007 work began on renovating the stadium. The north stand was opened on May 29, 2009, increasing the capacity to 10,902. After the completion of the south stand and its opening on October 29, 2010, 15,000 seats will be available.

After the club was promoted to Ligue 1 for the first time in 2011, the main and opposite stands were to be rebuilt and, once completed, would offer 22,000 seats.

With the demolition of the east stand in the summer of 2015, a new phase of renovation and redesign of the former athletics stadium into a football arena began. By the start of the 2017/18 season, the Stade Gaston Gérard will have four grandstands right on the edge of the field and offer 16,000 seats.
